From the south to the north, the weather is gradually getting warmer, and people must wash their heavy down jackets before storing them. There are many ways to clean, but with it comes the problem...
In addition to sending it to the laundromat, hand washing is definitely very troublesome. The down jacket becomes very bulky when it gets wet with water. Machine washing will save a lot of trouble, but machine washing does not look very convenient. If the washing is bad, the washing machine will explode in severe cases! I am not alarming, but the lessons in this regard are vivid in my eyes. But it doesn't matter! Today, I will do a tutorial on how to properly machine wash down jackets for friends who want to wash down jackets!
Step 1: Before cleaning the down jacket, many people have overlooked an important point! Look at the washing label first, which is also known as the "clothing instruction manual". What fabric materials are included, whether there is a waterproof coating, duck down or goose down, and how much bulk. There is also the washing conditions, whether it can be machine washed and so on. If you do not understand the washing label, it is very likely that the down jacket will be damaged due to careless washing.
Points to note: Look at the washing label and washing conditions
Step 2: After the down jacket is ready for machine washing, start to check the pockets of the down jacket. When wearing down jackets in winter, you often put keys, coins, tissues, etc. in your pockets. Hard objects such as coins and keys are easily shaken out, and the high-speed operation rubs against the clothes, which eventually leads to the wear and tear of the clothes. And once the paper towel is washed, it is easy to make the clothes covered with shredded paper, which is difficult to clean. In addition, the zipper and button must be pulled and fastened before cleaning. If the slider is not pulled up, it is likely to scratch the fabric during the drying process.
Points to note: Check pockets, zippers, buttons
Step 3: The most dirty parts of the down jacket are mostly concentrated on the neckline, cuffs, etc. It is difficult to clean these dirts by ordinary machine washing procedures. You can try to use a special cleaner, spray the neckline and cuffs, and then wipe it with a wet towel. If the dirt is difficult to clean, you can also use soft bristles for deep cleaning.
Points to note: Focus on cleaning the cuffs, necklines, pockets and other parts of the down jacket
Step 4: The preparatory work is done! It can be put into the washing machine? Wait, don’t forget what is the most afraid of machine-washing down jackets? Explosion! Then why does the down jacket explode? The powerful airflow filled the down jacket, and the high-speed drying caused the constant internal expansion, with a bang! The down jacket exploded like this.
But don't worry too much. Most down jackets will not explode easily under normal washing conditions. It is recommended that when cleaning, it is best to put a special down jacket net pocket to prevent the down jacket from being over-expanded, and the amount of clothes put into the washing machine should not exceed two-thirds of the total capacity.
Points to note: Set a special down jacket net pocket, and the amount of laundry should not exceed two-thirds of the total capacity.
Step 5: It is best to choose a neutral laundry detergent before machine washing. This is because neutral detergents do less damage to the fabric and down. Alkaline detergents are used. If the rinsing is not clean, the residual detergent will cause damage to the down jacket, and it is easy to leave white marks on the surface of the clothes, which will affect the appearance.
Points to note: Choose special laundry detergent (neutral), and wash a down jacket should not exceed half of the laundry detergent bottle cap.
Step 6: Most washing machines on the market have a separate "down jacket" program. Through this program, the water temperature can be set to 30°C (the washing temperature should not be too high), and the spin speed should not exceed 800 rpm. If the washing machine at home does not have this program, it can also be achieved by setting it separately.
Points to note: The water temperature for machine washing of down jackets should not be too high (below 30°C), and the dehydration speed should be controlled at 600-800 rpm.
Step 6: Most of the down jacket fabrics have poor heat resistance and are most afraid of sunlight exposure. Long-term exposure to the sun will accelerate the aging of the fabric fibers. Therefore, if conditions permit, you can also use a heat pump dryer to dry at low temperature to make the down more fluffy. When drying on low heat, make sure there is enough room for tumbling. Remember to use high heat to dry! The filling materials of down jackets are mostly duck down and goose down. If the down is heated too high, it will cause the down to shrink, which not only affects the bulkiness of the down jacket, but also affects the thermal performance of the down jacket.
Points to note: Avoid prolonged sunlight exposure, down jackets can choose a heat pump dryer (low temperature drying)
